About Sunday School

Kuwait St. George Universal Syrian Orthodox Church Sunday School affiliated to the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Sunday School Association (MJSSA) is established in 1974. The Sunday School plays an important role in the Parish by providing necessary spiritual guidance to the children of our Parish. Sunday School classes are held on every Friday from 8.15 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. at the NECK Activity Buildings by dedicated and experienced teachers for LKG to X standard students.

School Classes (LKG – 7th Standard) are also held every Saturday from 5:00 pm to 6:15 pm at Salwa Armenian Church.

In 2001-2002, the Sunday School celebrated its Silver Jubilee.

In 2016-2017, the Sunday School celebrated its Ruby Jubilee.

✨ Celebrating 50 Years of Faith, Formation & Fellowship

Mor Athanasius Jacobite Sunday School, Kuwait – Golden Jubilee 2026

A remarkable journey of faith that began with a handful of children five decades ago has now blossomed into a vibrant spiritual community of more than 500 students and nearly 50 teachers.

Mor Athanasius Jacobite Sunday School, the spiritual educational wing of St. George Universal Syrian Orthodox Reesh Church (Valiyapally), Kuwait, proudly celebrates its Golden Jubilee — 50 years of nurturing generations in faith, worship and the Word of God.

Established in September 1974, Mor Athanasius Sunday School holds the distinction of being the first Sunday School established in a Gulf country under the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church. In its earliest days, classes were held on Wednesdays, before moving to Fridays following the Holy Qurbana from 1975.

A Humble Beginning, A Blessed Journey

The Sunday School was founded during the tenure of Kadavil Dr. Paulose Mor Athanasius Metropolitan, the then Diocesan Metropolitan, and Arakkal Geevarghese Cor-Episcopa, the Parish Vicar. Mr. K. C. Kurian Kodiyattu served as its first Headmaster.

From those humble beginnings, the Sunday School steadily grew in strength and purpose. Its journey, however, was not without challenges. The 1990 Gulf War brought Sunday School activities to a standstill for nearly two and a half years.

In December 1992, under the leadership of the then Vicar, Rev. Fr. Baby Elias, the Sunday School was revived — marking the beginning of a renewed chapter of growth and ministry.

Since then, generations of children have passed through its classrooms, learning the Holy Scriptures, growing in the traditions of the Church and carrying the values of their faith to communities across the world.

Growing in Faith, Growing Together

Today, despite the continuous movement of families from Kuwait to other countries, Mor Athanasius Sunday School remains a flourishing community with over 500 students and around 50 teachers, making it the second-largest Jacobite Sunday School in the Gulf region in terms of student strength.

The Sunday School presently operates across three centres — NECK, Fahaheel and Abbassiya — offering 12 classes from Kindergarten through Grade 10. Christeens (Teens for Christ) continues the spiritual journey for children who have completed Grade 10.

The Sunday School was registered with the Syrian Orthodox Sunday School Board of the Outside Kerala Diocese on 1 August 1996 and was subsequently affiliated with the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Sunday School Association (MJSSA), Puthencruz, in 1999 under affiliation number 573. The Fahaheel and Abbassiya branches were established in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Beyond the Classroom

For Mor Athanasius Sunday School, Christian formation has always extended beyond textbooks and examinations.

Alongside the MJSSA curriculum and structured examinations, children are nurtured through JSVBS, Balakalolsavam, student camps, Bible quizzes, Holy Bible reading programmes, the Sunday School Choir, Annual Day and Grade 10 Convocation, charitable initiatives, and numerous programmes designed to strengthen faith, fellowship, creativity and service.

Its ministry has also reached beyond Kuwait. For several years, Mor Athanasius Sunday School has prepared and shared English Vacation Bible School materials with Jacobite parishes across different countries.

In recognition of its contribution and service, the Sunday School was honoured by the MJSSA UK Diocese during the first Kuwait visit of His Beatitude Catholicos Aboon Mor Baselios Joseph.

Having celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2001–2002 and Ruby Jubilee in 2016–2017, Mor Athanasius Sunday School now enters another historic chapter.

✨ The Golden Jubilee – A Celebration of Legacy & Hope

The Golden Jubilee “Thaibooso” celebrations inaugurated on 11 September 2026, in conjunction with the Holy Qurbana at the National Evangelical Church of Kuwait (NECK).

The Jubilee year will feature a series of special initiatives, including the Golden Jubilee Logo Release, a gathering of Sunday School teachers from Jacobite parishes across Kuwait, an All-Malankara Sunday School Music Competition, Children’s Art Exhibition, Essay Competition, Children’s Musical Band, and a commemorative Golden Jubilee Souvenir.

But beyond the programmes and celebrations, this Golden Jubilee is ultimately a celebration of people and faith — of the clergy who provided spiritual guidance, the headmasters and teachers who served with dedication, the parents who entrusted generations of children to this ministry, and above all, the thousands of students who have walked through its doors over the past five decades.

The Golden Jubilee was formally inaugurated at the National Evangelical Church of Kuwait (NECK) by His Grace Archimandrite Oshin Chwalvertanian, Prelate of the Armenian Diocese of Kuwait and surrounding region.

The Jubilee gathering, held following the Holy Qurbana, was blessed with a special message from His Eminence Dr. Geevarghese Mor Coorilos Metropolitan, Patriarchal Vicar of Kuwait.

The programme was presided over by the Parish Vicar, Rev. Fr. Bibin George Thomas, with Mr. Basil C. Alias, Headmaster of the Sunday School, extending the welcome. Felicitations were offered by Mr. Roy K. Yohannan, Secretary of the National Evangelical Church of Kuwait, and Mr. Renjith Kuruvilla, Parish Secretary.

The occasion was also graced by Rev. Fr. Ardak Kehyayan, Vicar of the Armenian Church in Kuwait; Rev. Fr. Glinto Varughese of the Thrissur Diocese; Mr. Ajoesh Mathew, Council Member of the National Evangelical Church of Kuwait; Mr. Bechu Mathan, Parish Trustee; Mr. Eldhose P. Joy, Church Managing Committee Member; and Commander Binny Mathew.

Mrs. Sherin Shinu Jesus, Assistant Headmistress, delivered the vote of thanks.

Sunday School teachers, students, parents, parish members, and well-wishers came together in large numbers to celebrate this memorable occasion.

As we celebrate this Golden Jubilee, we remember with profound gratitude the clergy, teachers, leaders, parents, and generations of faithful members who laid the foundation, carried the mission forward, and shaped the spiritual journey of countless children over the past five decades.

The Golden Jubilee is more than a celebration of our past. It is a renewed commitment to the future—to continue nurturing generations in Christ, firmly rooted in faith and our Syrian Orthodox tradition.
